Yesterday we got rid of two perfectly good vehicles. The Volvo and the boat. You know what I feel today? FREAKING GREAT! I don't like stuff. The closer I draw Jesus the more repulsed I am by stuff. It was so much fun to get rid of that stuff that I started to look around the house for more stuff that we could get away from us.
Four years ago we were wishing for nicer cars and a boat. Yesterday I couldn't contain the JOY of NOT HAVING THEM.
I've also stopped ingesting caffeine -- also feels FREAKING GREAT!
Also, I can't remember the last show I watched on tv. -- also feels FREAKING GREAT!
We do still have the scooter and the Explorer for transportation. Just today I was thinking -- why do we need the explorer? We don't have to tow the boat! Maybe a stuff reduction is coming there.
There is great freedom in less stuff ... try it -- get rid of something and see how you feel!
19 Days until we board the plane ...

Rachel, if you decide to get rid if the Explorer, give your brother a call. (Let me tell you, transportation becomes more complicated when you have a kiddo.) Congrats on getting rid of stuff. Remember, none of it belongs to you anyway... you are merely a steward. So, when are you and AP going to apply for seminary? Speaking of... Read this book (best book I read this year): Making Spiritual Sense... it is about the importance of story-telling.
I am sure you will have good stories to tell from your adventures in Africa. I love you.

D- I just heard Donald Miller talk at a conference about story telling ... thanks for the suggestion, I'll pick it up. love you -r
I was talking to someone else going to Mamelodi and they have a plan to sell a few more things in order to have enough money to go. They said "when we no longer own anything of value, we will probably be able to go." How cool. God is stripping people of their STUFF so they can experience it to the fullest. awesome. You guys rock.
Hi Rachel - I found your blog through Amy's blog. I have a similar feeling before South Africa. While my ridding of stuff isn't as big as yours, I have totally been convicted of having too much stuff. I've just gotten rid of a ton of clothes (actually selling them to Plato's Closet and giving the rest to Goodwill) but it feels so great to get rid of them. I'm also trying to find additional things to sell, either for a garage sale or to just give away and not worry about it! Plus, it's great for decluttering the house. :)
I had some people share Donald M's talk. It's really given me a lot to ponder...
glad you found the blog Kim -- feel free to come by anytime! This getting rid of stuff thing is epidemic it seems. Can't wait to hang with you (a little) in SA!
Hi Rachel,
My Explorer is 12 years old and going strong. Always good for gallons and gallons of paint and a ladder and rolled up murals.
"...and what man, finding in a field, a pearl of great price, sells everything he owns to buy that field."
There's a closet full of your stuff at the farmhouse you grew up in and a pile of things under your old bed.
David's giant box of books is arriving at his new home soon. I wonder if he wants the comic book collection of Austin's this trip...
I'm selling everything to go to Ohio...
