1 Month Check Up

Little Cana turned one month on Thursday. To celebrate we went to see Dr.M. Cana is up to 9lbs. 4 oz (50%tile) and is 22 inches long (80%tile). At one week she was 7lbs 8oz and 19.5 inches. It's amazing how fast they grow. She also got a Hep B booster -- I saw her turn dark purple and yell louder than she ever has before.

There was however a little hiccup in the check up. Dr.M detected a little "click" in her right hip. It could mean that the bone of her right thigh isn't quite tight enough in the socket of that side. To check it out we have an appointment for an ultrasound on Tuesday morning at Cincinnati Childrens. Worst case, she'll need to go to an orthopedist and be fitted with a special diaper/brace to correct the hip.

I don't think anything could have prepared me for the moment that Dr.M said, "now, there is one thing I need to talk to you about in her check up ... " I felt my lungs size up and my heart drop. I spent a good part of Thursday tearing up for no reason at all, even though I know that it is not severe, she is not in pain, and it is correctable.

This parenting stuff means trusting God in new ways every day. Apparently, that is easier said than done but I'm working on it.

OMG. I think I would have outright fainted when the doctor said that. You were very brave. I will pray for little Cana.

hey Rachel,
they detected a "click" in ben's hip at his one month appointment as well, and it ended up being fine! They thought they detected it again a few months later, but again, it was fine. I know that feeling of hearing something unexpected, and it is terrible. If you want to call me anytime, please do!
i'd love to meet litle Cana sometime also!

She will be fine. You had a much greater problem when you were 18 mo old, and it was simple to correct. Still, it's a shock to hear.

Think of those sweet South African children with problems you have helped address. Pray for their mothers.

Love, Mommy

I can imagine how shocking that news must have been. I would have reacted the SAME way. Glad to hear that it's nothing major, though. BTW...when I was a baby, I had to wear a cast-thingy to correct a hip problem. It's no fun, but like you said...at least it's not serious. Keep us posted!!
