They Thought We Were Just Shacking Up Wednesday

In honor of this fantastic story that AMO told, I remembered a similar thing that happened to me. Two of the kids on our street are little brother/little sister in the nonprofit organization Big Brothers/Big Sisters. A few years ago the local amusement park, Kings Island offered a free ticket to all of the kids in this program and their mentors. Anthony and Krissy were pumped. They told me all about their day, and how they met a friend of mine. I tried and tried to figure out who the friend was, but I couldn't figure it out.

The next Sunday after Kids Club, this guy that volunteered with Andrew and I for years comes up to me and says, "Hey Rachel, I always thought that you and Andrew were married." Stunned, I said, "We ARE married -- what made you think we weren't?"

John then went onto tell me that he was taking his Little Brother to Kings Island and happened to be in a long line next to Anthony. When John asked where Anthony lived, he recognized our street. John then said, "Do you have a neighbor named Rachel?" To which Anthony replied, "Yeah, she's real nice -- and so is her boyfriend, Andrew."

So, John didn't even question it. He just thought that we were dating. Anthony lived next to us for years and assumed we weren't married. I just take that to mean that he thought we were too young and too fun to be married. Either way, that's a really weird thing. I bet people who are living together and not married get the opposite assumption all the time. I wonder if it is equally as weird to them.

YES! Great story. I bet kids do think that married people are old, have kids (I am assuming this story was pre-Cana) and are not fun. I love it.
